Our colleague Daniel Collado from CIDE, has contributed to a new study by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), published in The Lancet Oncology, on the prevalence and consequences of breast cancer worldwide.
The study analyses data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023 and highlights significant inequalities between high- and low-resource countries, projecting an increase in cases and deaths by 2050, particularly in low-resource countries.
Furthermore, the study identifies several modifiable risk factors associated with breast cancer. The main risk factor identified is diet (specifically diets high in red meat), followed by smoking, high blood glucose, being overweight and obesity, alcohol consumption, and low levels of physical activity.
This article aims to take a further step towards better understanding global health inequalities and supporting strategies for prevention and early detection.
